Mussolini proclaimed the Italian Social Republic September 1943, under a fascist government, one week after the Italians capulated to the allies. The Social Republic territory consisted of Northern Italy areas still occupied by the Germans.

VF LH. Printed for the Ionian Islands, west of Greece, for Italian Occupation. Italian Pegasus airmail overprinted, "Isole Jonie." The islands were occupied by Italy until they were defeated by the Allies in 1943. The Germans then took over the occupation.
